The complexity of oil and petroleum samples presents a significant challenge to analytical chemists. Currently, the mass spectrometric instrument of choice for complex hydrocarbon or petrochemical samples is FTICR-MS, due to its ultra-high mass resolution capabilities. However, exact mass data alone cannot fully characterize the samples. Coupling ion mobility with QTof mass spectrometry (IMS-HDMS) offers an additional, orthogonal mode of separation, and can also provide information about an ion’s size and shape. Data obtained from the IMS-HDMS instrument are similar or complementary to the data produced by FTICR-MS. This approach could offer a cost-effective option for oil and petroleum analysis. This presentation discusses the characterization of crude oil fractions from the Nigerian Egina Oil Field using ion mobility MS technology.
